How does Life coaching differ from therapy?

Life coaches and therapists may work on similar issues with clients but the way the sessions are approached, and the way the goals are met will look different. Life coaching focuses on empowering individuals to set goals to improve specific areas of their life such as health, career or relationships. Coaching is results orientated and focuses on the present. The coach and client are partners in the process with the coach holding the client accountable to meet their goals. Blocks and obstacles may surface during the process, these could be limiting or outdated belief systems, unhelpful behaviours, or negative thought patterns. The coach will use tools and techniques to help the client to overcome these blocks in order to move forward and meet their goals.

Counselling/therapy helps clients overcome mental and emotional issues that are disrupting day to day living. Counsellors provide therapy for a number of psychological issues including trauma, anxiety, depression, addictions, stress. Counsellors use therapeutic modalities grounded in theory and evidence-based research such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help clients address their psychological difficulties. Counselling often focuses on past childhood experiences to help clients address their current concerns.

What to expect from Life/Spiritual Coaching

Coaching is a collaborative process where the coach and client partnership helps to empower the client to make changes to enhance their life. Typically, clients seek coaching to move their life forward in certain areas. Coaching takes the client from where they are presently to where they want to be. The process involves goal setting, action planning and reviewing progress through each stage. Blocks and obstacles may arise along the way which the coach and client work through to overcome. Spiritual coaching involves using life coaching skills whilst integrating spiritual tools and techniques to help individuals connect more deeply to their spirituality.
